What is Anusol Cream?

Anusol cream is used for the treatment of minor pain, swelling, itching, and discomfort caused by haemorrhoids and other problems of the anal area such as anal fissures, and itching. Hydrocortisone is a corticosteroid, a synthetic steroid used as anti-inflammatory and antipruritic agents.

Anusol HC is a topical corticosteroid with hydrocortisone 2.5% in a water-washable cream.

How does Anusol Cream work?

Anusol HC is a corticosteroid that works by relieving the swelling, itching, and discomfort caused by haemorrhoids and other problems of the anal area.

What are the benefits of using Anusol Cream?

The main benefit of using Anusol cream is the relief it provides to the pain, swelling, itching, and discomfort caused by haemorrhoids and other problems of the anal area. This medication effectively relieves the swelling, pain, and itching in the anal area.

How do I use Anusol HC?

Use this product exactly as instructed by your doctor. It will also help if you will read first the patient information leaflet that comes with the medication package.

Before using this medication, clean first the affected area with mild soap and water. Make sure to rinse the area well then pat it dry.

You can apply this product inside the anus by using the applicator tip or nozzle, according to the instructions in the product package, or as directed by your doctor.

You can start by filling the applicator tip with Anusol HC from its container as directed. When the applicator is filled up, you can gently insert it inside the anus and apply the cream in and around the anal opening. Do not insert your finger or any part of the container into the anus. Do not insert the tip of the applicator more than ½ to 1 inch inside. Do not use your finger when applying the medication inside the anus. Discard after use a single-use tube and applicator if you are using this type.

When applying this product to the outside of the anus, you can use your finger to apply a small amount of cream or ointment to the affected area and rub in gently.

Unless directed by your doctor, do not cover the area applied with the product with plastic or waterproof bandages. Doing so may increase the absorption of the medication through the skin. While it may improve how the medicine works, it may also increase the risk of side effects.

Thoroughly wash your hands immediately after applying the product. Avoid getting the medicine in your eyes, nose, ears, or mouth. In the event of accidental application in those areas, rinse the area immediately with clean water.

Use this product 2 to 4 times daily, or after each bowel movement, or as directed by your doctor. Regular use of this medication will allow you to get the most benefit from it. Use the medication at the same times each day to help you remember that you have to apply it.

Do not use more of the product, use it more often, or for longer than what is prescribed by your doctor. If you have been using Anusol HC in high doses or for a long time, do not stop using it without the approval of your doctor. Some conditions may get worse when the use of this medicine is stopped suddenly. Your doctor may ask you to gradually decrease your dose.

Inform your doctor if there is no improvement in your condition, or if your condition worsens, after using this product for 1 to 2 weeks.

Anusol Cream dosage

The usual dose of Anusol cream is to apply it 2 to 4 times a day, or after each bowel movement, or as directed by your doctor.

Side effects & precautions

Anusol cream, like other medications, may cause some unwanted side effects, although not everybody who uses this medication gets the side effects.

When you use Anusol HC, there is the possibility that you may experience redness, itching, or burning at the application site. If any of these effects persist or worsen, get in touch with your doctor or pharmacist right away.

Inform your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects such as rectal bleeding, skin redness or tenderness, change in skin appearance, or any other signs infection.

It is very rare that this medication may be absorbed into the bloodstream, which can lead to side effects of too much corticosteroids. The side effects are common in people and children who have been using this medicine for a long time. Report to your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • Weight loss
  • A headache
  • Unusual or extreme tiredness
  • Vision problems
  • Swelling ankles or feet
  • Increased thirst or urination

Immediately report to your doctor if you experience these rare but very serious side effects - signs of serious infection.

Anusol cream rarely causes very serious allergic reactions. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience the following:

  • Rash
  • Severe dizziness
  • Itching
  • Trouble breathing
  • Swelling or itching of the face, tongue, or throat

Report to your doctor if you will experience any other side effects that are associated with your use of this product.

Before you start using Anusol HC, inform your doctor if you are allergic to hydrocortisone, any of the inactive ingredients of this medicine, or if you have other allergies.

Share with your doctor your medical history before starting the use of Anusol HC, especially if you have a history of diabetes, infections, eye problems, stomach or intestinal problems, or liver disease.

If you have been using corticosteroid medication for a long time, the use of Anusol HC may make it difficult for your body to respond to physical stress. Inform your healthcare professional that you have been using corticosteroid before any emergency treatment or surgical procedure.

Exercise caution when using this product in children. Do not apply this product over a large area or use tight-fitting nappies or plastic pants unless ordered by your doctor.

Although rarely, this medication may slow down the growth of a child when used for a long time. The medicine’s effect on final adult height is still unknown. Have your doctor check regularly the height of your child.

This medication is not recommended for use during pregnancy. Anusol HC must be prescribed only during pregnancy only when very necessary. When using during pregnancy, this product should not be used for long periods of time or in large amounts. Discuss first with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this product during pregnancy.

It is not established if Anusol HC passes into breast milk. Consult first with your doctor and discuss with him the benefits and risks of using this medication while breastfeeding.

Drug interactions may alter the way your medicines work or increase the risk of side effects. Before you start using this medication, share with your doctor a list of all medications you are currently using to enable him to check for any unsafe combination with Anusol HC.
